Nevada Rules on Wage Deductions and Withholding

Overview

Nevada does not give employers free rein to dock pay. NRS 608.110 allows withholding of dues or assessments for certain employee-benefit arrangements and other deductions authorized by the employee’s written order. Each payday, the employer must furnish an itemized list of deductions.

Employee Rights

  • Written authorization for most non-tax, non-court deductions.
  • An itemized deduction list with each wage payment.
  • If the employer withholds money for deposit in a financial institution, the deposit generally must occur within five working days after the payday, unless a different agreement applies.

Related Tip and Uniform Rules

Employers may not take tips or credit tips against minimum wage under NRS 608.160. Distinctive uniforms and special cleaning generally must be furnished without cost under NRS 608.165.

Practical Steps

  • Request copies of any deduction authorizations you signed.
  • Challenge unexplained shortages promptly and in writing.
  • Compare tip and uniform deductions against NRS 608.160 and 608.165.
